Turned On: A Creative's Guide to Awakening Presence, Pleasure, and Possibility
The world is imbued with a life force, a thrumming relational energy of creativity. That life force is Eros, and connecting with the erotic opens up a world full of possibility, sensuality, and creativity. For far too long we have relegated the erotic to the bedroom, when in reality it is a fundamental energy that helps us connect more deeply with ourselves, each other, the earth, and the creative potential within us. We also live in a world that equates our productivity with our worth, leaving us feeling overtaxed, exhausted, burned out, and completely disconnected from ourselves and others. In Turned On, artist and musician Brie Stoner redefines the erotic, stating that it is more than just human intimacy; it can be the antidote to feeling anxious, disconnected, and uninspired. By reframing Eros as the energy of life and creativity itself, Stoner invites us to reawaken presence, playfulness, and possibility as the gateways to transformation. Just as physical relationships are contingent upon the right context, good communication, and embodied presence, Stoner offers a similar contextual shift and the tools needed for us to access creativity through the body and in the present moment. Fittingly, she explores how the erotic has been minimized and misunderstood in modern life. She then offers practical applications of how an erotically enlivened life is a creatively fulfilling one, in which our relationships, parenting, work, and creativity flourish. For those of us who yearn for life to be more inspired, adventurous, and sensual, Turned On is our guide to relighting the spark within us.

Sailing Alone: A Surprising History of Isolation and Survival at Sea
2024 National Outdoor Book Award Silver Medal Winner "A masterfully curated collection...You don't have to be a sailor to be blown away by this fascinating, bighearted book." --Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea, Travels with George, and Second Wind A story as vast and exhilarating as the open ocean itself, SAILING ALONE chronicles the daring, disastrous, and often absurd history of those who chose to sail across the ocean, in very small boats, alone. Sailing by yourself, out of sight of land, can be invigorating and terrifying, compelling and tedious - and sometimes all of the above in one morning. But it is also a wide expanse of time in which to think. Sailing Alone tells the story of some of the remarkable people who, over the last four centuries, have spent weeks and months, moving slowly over the world's largest laboratory: a capricious and startling place in which to observe oneself, the weather, the stars, and countless sea creatures, from the tiniest to the most massive and threatening. Richard J. King profiles characters famous, diverse, international, and obscure, from Joshua Slocum of 1898 to modern teenagers daring to take the challenge. They see strange hallucinations, lie to us (and themselves) on their travel logs, encounter sharks, befriend birds, and experience ESP, all part of the unnerving reality of extended isolation. And some disappear altogether. Sailing Alone also recounts the author's own nearly catastrophic solo crossing of the Atlantic, and the mystery of his inexplicable survival one sunny afternoon. An enormously engaging new book for skippers and armchair voyagers alike.

Penman of the Founding: A Biography of John Dickinson
Why is it that so many Americans have not heard of John Dickinson? John Dickinson of Pennsylvania and Delaware was an early leader of the resistance to British rule in the American colonies. In fact, to many, he was the most prominent figure in the struggle for independence, though his Quaker-influenced opposition to violence kept him from signing one of its most famous documents in July 1776. Still, Dickinson, one of the wealthiest men in the colonies, did more to promote the cause behind it than almost anyone else, not only as the lead draftsman in all the national Congresses, but in his popular writing. His hugely influential Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania educated colonists about their rights and instructed them in how to defend those rights in non-violent ways. In essence he taught the colonists to think of themselves as Americans, united in a common cause. Despite his refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence, he continued to serve the nation in a number of capacities--in Congress, as governor of Delaware and Pennsylvania, as president of the Annapolis Convention, as delegate to the Federal Convention, and as president of the Delaware constitutional convention. Because of his close association with Quakerism, he also took stances unlike any other major figure of his day, making him among the first to advocate civil disobedience as a form of protest, freeing his slaves and embracing abolitionism, advocating rights for women, Indians, prisoners, and the poor. He nonetheless volunteered for active service in the Delaware militia during the War of Independence. Despite the key part he played in the country's founding, few Americans today have heard of John Dickinson. Early chroniclers and historians, seeking to create a patriotic narrative and taking their cues from his political enemies, cast him as a coward and Loyalist for not signing the Declaration. Many later historians have simply accepted and echoed this distorted and dismissive view. Jane Calvert's fascinating, authoritative, and accessible biography, the first complete account of Dickinson's life and work, restores him to a place of prominence in the nation's formative years.

Vanishing Fleece: Adventures in American Wool
Vanishing Fleece is a fast-paced account of the year New York Times bestselling author Clara Parkes spent transforming a 676-pound bale of fleece into saleable yarn, and the people and vanishing industry she discovered along the way. Join Clara Parkes on a cross-country adventure and meet a cast of characters that includes the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Travel the country with her as she meets a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins. In pursuit of the perfect yarn, Parkes describes a brush with the dangers of opening a bale (they can explode), and her adventures from Maine to Wisconsin ("the most knitterly state") and back again; along the way, she presents a behind-the-scenes look at the spinners, scourers, genius inventors, and crazy-complex mill machines that populate the yarn-making industry. By the end of the book, you'll be ready to set aside the backyard chickens and add a flock of sheep instead. Simply put, no other book exists that explores American culture through the lens of wool. "While I laughed and loved Clara's prose, I was left with so much more. It's actually a lovely and melancholy look at an American industry that's quickly changing, and a beautiful story of the people who are sacrificing to maintain it." --Judy Greer, actor, director, and author of I Don't Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star

Dusk, Night, Dawn: On Revival and Courage
"Anne Lamott is my Oprah." -Chicago Tribune From the bestselling author of Help, Thanks, Wow comes an inspiring guide to restoring hope and joy in our lives. In Dusk, Night, Dawn, Anne Lamott explores the tough questions that many of us grapple with. How can we recapture the confidence we once had as we stumble through the dark times that seem increasingly bleak? As bad newspiles up--from climate crises to daily assaults on civility--how can we cope? Where, she asks, "do we start to get our world and joy and hope and our faith in life itself back . . . with our sore feet, hearing loss, stiff fingers, poor digestion, stunned minds, broken hearts?" We begin, Lamott says, by accepting our flaws and embracing our humanity. Drawing from her own experiences, Lamott shows us the intimate and human ways we can adopt to move through life's dark places and toward the light of hope that still burns ahead for all of us. As she does in Help, Thanks, Wow and her other bestselling books, Lamott explores the thorny issues of life and faith by breaking them down into manageable, human-sized questions for readers to ponder, in the process showing us how we can amplify life's small moments of joy by staying open to love and connection. As Lamott notes in Dusk, Night, Dawn, "I got Medicare three days before I got hitched, which sounds like something an old person might do, which does not describe adorably ageless me." Marrying for the first time with a grown son and a grandson, Lamott explains that finding happiness with a partner isn't a function of age or beauty but of outlook and perspective. Full of the honesty, humor, and humanity that have made Lamott beloved by millions of readers, Dusk, Night, Dawn is classic Anne Lamott--thoughtful and comic, warm and wise--and further proof that Lamott truly speaks to the better angels in all of us.

You Can't Be Like Jonah
Is God calling you to do something outside your comfort zone? Is He asking you to move from one place to the other, to start a ministry you feel underqualified for, to share your story with others, even though you wonder, Who am I? Jennifer Jaye sensed God telling her to pack and move from Kansas to Arizona, 1200 miles from home, away from her children and grandchildren who were nearby. But why? What did He have in store for her there? When would He show her the ministry He had for her? In search of the answers, the author journaled how the Lord directed her to step into radical obedience. Her story details many of the ways He grabbed her attention, answered her questions, and set her feet in ministry in Phoenix, Arizona. As her story unfolds, Jennifer correlates the ways the enemy tried to trip her up in her journey to draw closer to God's call on her life. Includes discussion questions for small group or individual study guide.

Real Physicians Real Faith
In the fall of 2024, Ben spent a sabbatical at The Faraday Institute for Science & Religion and St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge. The Faraday Institute is a welcoming community of keen-minded scholars and good-hearted friends. The place is a beehive of activity. They have programs for undergraduate and graduate students, churches, and schools. Their team lectures everywhere from Japan to the United Arab Emirates. They greeted Ben into their midst, hooked him into all fun Cambridge spots, and challenged him with the most provocative ideas.Several of the Faraday scholars mentioned a deeply influential book, Real Scientists, Real Faith, first published in 1991, which is a collection of essays by Christian Oxbridge scientists who reconcile their faith and their science. They are astronomers, biochemists, and physicists of the highest rank. At a time when the "New Atheists" are so popular, and the "Nones" are on the rise, this thoughtful collection gives a refreshing perspective: it is possible to be both a scientist and a Christian. This collection is borne from that tradition; and yet, perhaps physicians engage in faith a bit differently than the scientist. A scientist beholds the glory of God in the cosmos, in the chemical reaction, and in the microscope. A physician beholds the glory of God in the patient. God's presence is often experienced in the weeping, the suffering, the grind of the work, and even, hopefully, the healing. We rejoice when the patient improves; but we also struggle with our burnout and our failures. Sure, we too are scientists. But we are also human. Because medicine is intensely human, we, as Christian physicians, lean into our faith. What else are we to do? As Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God." (John 6:68-69)Ben, Andre, David, and Mike invited a variety of Christian physicians from different pathways to write a thoughtful, personal essay about how their faith and medical practice intertwined. Perhaps they were influenced by a patient? A tragic moment in their lives? A grace-imbued rescue? A conflict difficult to resolve? They are a diverse group - surgeons, primary care docs, missionaries, academics, researchers, and even a flight surgeon! And so, the book has a diversity of stories. Some are intensely personal. Stories come from the highest echelon of the academy. The authors tell lots of stories of the patients who inspire us, challenge us, and deepen our faith (please note, any patient name has been changed and details have been altered to preserve confidentiality).Throughout, we share how God has moved in their lives. How else can we contend with the suffering of our patients? Our own challenges with grief and trauma? The co-editors are so grateful for the authentic struggles, the deep faith, and the abiding love of these contributors-and also for receiving their manuscripts in the requested six weeks, a miracle in itself! We are not perfect - far from it. We struggle with our faith. We doubt. We weep. But each of these stories articulates the mystery of God's power to work in our lives. Ben and David hope these stories give witness not to us, but to God's grace. We hope these stories would encourage those on their own journey, those who ponder how being a Christian and a physician are not contrary to each other but synergistically lead to the flourishing of both.
