Sexualities and Identities of Minority Women (2009)
The concept for this book came about following the publication of the volume Health Issues Confronting Minority Men Who Have Sex with Men, published by Springer in 2008. Consistent with its title, that work focused on speci?c health issues identi?ed by communities, researchers, and AIDS service providers that were and continue to be of concern . During the preparation of that volume, I received numerous telephone calls and e-mails from women in various parts of the country, asking why a book was not also being developed to address their often-neglected concerns. Accordingly, thetopicsaddressedinIdentitiesandSexualitiesofMinorityWomen were developed based on input from minority women who participated in focus groups conducted in diverse regions of the United States. These focus groups were held speci?cally to provide an opportunity for sexual minority women in minority communities to identify those issues that from their perspective are most salient and relevant to their lives. It is notsurprising, in view of the variation in process by which the topics were identi?ed, as well as the differences in perspective as- ciated with differences in sex and gender, that this resulting compilation of topics departs substantially from the focus of the companion text addressing health issues of minority men who have sex with men.

R&d and Productivity: The Econometric Evidence
Zvi Griliches, a world-renowned pioneer in the field of productivity growth, has compiled in a single volume his pathbreaking research on R&D and productivity. Griliches addresses the relationship between research and development (R&D) and productivity, one of the most complex yet vital issues in today's business world. Using econometric techniques, he establishes this connection and measures its magnitude for firm-, industry-, and economy-level data. Griliches began his studies of productivity growth during the 1950s, adding a variable of "knowledge stock" to traditional production function models, and his work has served as the point of departure for much of the research into R&D and productivity. This collection of essays documents both Griliches's distinguished career as well as the history of this line of thought. As inputs into production increasingly taking the form of "intellectual capital" and new technologies that are not as easily measured as traditional labor and capital, the methods Griliches has refined and applied to R&D become crucial to understanding today's economy.

Do Good Fences Make Good Neighbors?: What History Teaches Us about Strategic Barriers and International Security
A number of nations, conspicuously Israel and the United States, have been increasingly attracted to the use of strategic barriers to promote national defense. In Do Good Fences Make Good Neighbors?, defense analyst Brent Sterling examines the historical use of strategic defenses such as walls or fortifications to evaluate their effectiveness and consider their implications for modern security.Sterling studies six famous defenses spanning 2,500 years, representing both democratic and authoritarian regimes: the Long Walls of Athens, Hadrian's Wall in Roman Britain, the Ming Great Wall of China, Louis XIV's Pré Carré, France's Maginot Line, and Israel's Bar Lev Line. Although many of these barriers were effective in the short term, they also affected the states that created them in terms of cost, strategic outlook, military readiness, and relations with neighbors. Sterling assesses how modern barriers against ground and air threats could influence threat perceptions, alter the military balance, and influence the builder's subsequent policy choices. Advocates and critics of strategic defenses often bolster their arguments by selectively distorting history. Sterling emphasizes the need for an impartial examination of what past experience can teach us. His study yields nuanced lessons about strategic barriers and international security and yields findings that are relevant for security scholars and compelling to general readers.

We are delighted to present this book which contains the Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics (ICCFD5), held in Seoul, Korea from July 7 through 11, 2008. The ICCFD series has established itself as the leading international conference series for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers specialized in the computation of fluid flow. In ICCFD5, 5 Invited Lectures and 3 Keynote Lectures were delivered by renowned researchers in the areas of innovative modeling of flow physics, innovative algorithm development for flow simulation, optimization and control, and advanced multidisciplinary - plications. There were a total of 198 contributed abstracts submitted from 25 countries. The executive committee consisting of C. H. Bruneau (France), J. J. Chattot (USA), D. Kwak (USA), N. Satofuka (Japan), and myself, was responsible for selection of papers. Each of the members had a separate subcommittee to carry out the evaluation. As a result of this careful peer review process, 138 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 28 for poster presentation. Among them, 5 (3 oral and 2 poster presentation) papers were withdrawn and 10 (4 oral and 6 poster presentation) papers were not presented. The conference was attended by 201 delegates from 23 countries. The technical aspects of the conference were highly beneficial and informative, while the non-technical aspects were fully enjoyable and memorable. In this book, 3 invited lectures and 1 keynote lecture appear first. Then 99 c- tributed papers are grouped under 21 subject titles which are in alphabetical order.

Pancreatology: From Bench to Bedside (2009)
Basic research discusses the implication of pancreatic stress protein in acute pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer and their possible role as therapeutic targets. Also, very original results show the unexpected role of lipids as mediators during acute pancreatitis. Gene screening strategies allow the detection of the genes responsbile for gemcitabine resistance of pancreatic cancer cells. They lead to the selection of several target genes, in order to suppress the resistance of cells to gemcitabine treatment. The mechanism by which tetrahydrocannabinol is anti-tumoral in pancreatic cancer cells is presented and the use of THC as a promising new therapeutic agent is discussed. Genetic data are shown concerning hundreds of families with hereditary chronic pancreatitis and their possible role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Another very original study addresses the prevention and treatment of pancreatic diseases with diat. In clinical research, convincing data about the use of endoscopic sphicterotomy in the management of acute bilary pancreatitis is presented, based on the experience of a Center highly specialized in pancreatic diseases.

Adaptive Networks: Theory, Models and Applications (2009)
Adding one and one makes two, usually. But sometimes things add up to more than the sum of their parts. This observation, now frequently expressed in the maxim "more is different", is one of the characteristic features of complex systems and, in particular, complex networks. Along with their ubiquity in real world systems, the ability of networks to exhibit emergent dynamics, once they reach a certain size, has rendered them highly attractive targets for research. The resulting network hype has made the word "network" one of the most in uential buzzwords seen in almost every corner of science, from physics and biology to economy and social sciences. The theme of "more is different" appears in a different way in the present v- ume, from the viewpoint of what we call "adaptive networks." Adaptive networks uniquely combine dynamics on a network with dynamical adaptive changes of the underlying network topology, and thus they link classes of mechanisms that were previously studied in isolation. Here adding one and one certainly does not make two, but gives rise to a number of new phenomena, including highly robust se- organization of topology and dynamics and other remarkably rich dynamical beh- iors.

Emerging Challenges for Security, Privacy and Trust: 24th Ifip Tc 11 International Information Security Conference, SEC 2009, Pafos, Cyprus, May 18-20
It was an honor and a privilege to chair the 24th IFIP International Information Se- rity Conference (SEC 2009), a 24-year-old event that has become a tradition for - formation security professionals around the world. SEC 2009 was organized by the Technical Committee 11 (TC-11) of IFIP, and took place in Pafos, Cyprus, during May 18-20, 2009. It is an indication of good fortune for a Chair to serve a conference that takes place in a country with the natural beauty of Cyprus, an island where the hospitality and frie- liness of the people have been going together, hand-in-hand, with its long history. This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at SEC 2009. In response to the call for papers, 176 papers were submitted to the conference. All of them were evaluated on the basis of their novelty and technical quality, and reviewed by at least two members of the conference Program Committee. Of the papers submitted, 39 were selected for presentation at the conference; the acceptance rate was as low as 22%, thus making the conference a highly competitive forum. It is the commitment of several people that makes international conferences pos- ble. That also holds true for SEC 2009. The list of people who volunteered their time and energy to help is really long.

Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking of Intelligent Systems (2009)
To design and develop capable, dependable, and affordable intelligent systems, their performance must be measurable. Scienti?c methodologies for standardization and benchmarking are crucial for quantitatively evaluating the performance of eme- ing robotic and intelligent systems' technologies. There is currently no accepted standard for quantitatively measuring the performance of these systems against user-de?ned requirements; and furthermore, there is no consensus on what obj- tive evaluation procedures need to be followed to understand the performance of these systems. The lack of reproducible and repeatable test methods has precluded researchers working towards a common goal from exchanging and communic- ing results, inter-comparing system performance, and leveraging previous work that could otherwise avoid duplication and expedite technology transfer. Currently, this lack of cohesion in the community hinders progress in many domains, such as m- ufacturing, service, healthcare, and security. By providing the research community with access to standardized tools, reference data sets, and open source libraries of solutions, researchers and consumers will be able to evaluate the cost and be- ?ts associated with intelligent systems and associated technologies. In this vein, the edited book volume addresses performance evaluation and metrics for intel- gent systems, in general, while emphasizing the need and solutions for standardized methods. To the knowledge of the editors, there is not a single book on the market that is solely dedicated to the subject of performance evaluation and benchmarking of intelligent systems.

Handbook of Bioenergy Economics and Policy (2010)
Concerns about energy security, uncertainty about oil prices, declining oil reserves, and global climate change are fueling a shift towards bioenergy as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. Public policies and private investments around the globe are aiming to increase local capacity to produce biofuels. A key constraint to the expansion of biofuel production is the limited amount of land available to meet the needs for fuel, feed, and food in the coming decades. Large-scale biofuel production raises concerns about food versus fuel tradeoffs, about demands for natural resources such as water, and about potential impacts on environmental quality. The book is organized into five parts. The introductory part provides a context for the emerging economic and policy challenges related to bioenergy and the motivations for biofuels as an energy source. The second part of the handbook includes chapters that examine the implications of expanded production of first generation biofuels for the allocation of land between food and fuel and for food/feed prices and trade in biofuels as well as the potential for technology improvements to mitigate the food vs. fuel competition for land. Chapters in the third part examine the infrastructural and logistical challenges posed by large scale biofuel production and the factors that will influence the location of biorefineries and the mix of feedstocks they use. The fourth part includes chapters that examine the environmental implications of biofuels, their implications for the design of policies and the unintended environmental consequences of existing biofuel policies. The final part presents economic analysis of the market, social welfare, and distributional effects of biofuel policies.

Testframe: An Approach to Structured Testing (2009)
Over 12 years ago Logica started the development of TestFrame(R), a test method which enables organizations to develop and execute their tests in a structured way. Since then many new techniques have been developed, such as, most recently, "Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs)" or "Software as a Service (SaaS)", requiring updates to test procedures and processes that seemed well-established. These trends have prompted Logica to update and renew the TestFrame(R) method. Chris Schotanus' new book takes into account the recent developments and his presentation is focused on supporting daily test practice. Every step within this structured test method is dealt with exhaustively, providing the reader with the necessary details for successful software testing. Yet his book will not only help test personnel to improve effectivity, it will also serve as a way to improve efficiency through its strong focus on reuse. This makes TestFrame the practical guide to testing information systems for everyone involved in software testing - test developers, test managers, and staff charged with quality assurance.
